Every Diwali, two very Indian instincts meet in the same house.
The first says: buy something new. Dhanteras is for bringing home metal, gold, a vehicle, a phone, a laptop. The ads begin weeks early, and the cart fills up.
The second instinct is older and quieter. It is the instinct that saves the good steel tiffin for 30 years, re-soles the chappals, sends the pressure cooker for a new gasket, gives the elder sibling's school bag to the younger one, and sells the old newspapers to the kabadiwala instead of throwing them away. Long before anyone said "circular economy", Indian homes ran on one.
The Panchatantra, written to teach young princes how to live wisely, has two stories that sit right in the middle of these instincts. They are worth retelling this Diwali, especially if a new laptop is on your list.
Story one: the Brahmin, the goat and the three crooks
A Brahmin was walking home from the market with a goat on his shoulders, a fine animal he had just been given for a ritual. Three crooks saw him and wanted the goat.
The first crook stepped onto the road and said, "Panditji, why are you carrying a dog on your shoulders?" The Brahmin laughed and walked on. A little further, the second crook said, "What a strange thing, a holy man carrying a dog." The Brahmin looked at the goat and frowned. Then the third crook appeared: "Sir, put down that dirty dog before someone sees you."
Three voices saying the same thing was too much. The Brahmin decided his own eyes must be wrong, dropped the goat by the road and hurried home to bathe. The crooks walked off with a perfectly good goat.
What this has to do with your laptop
Every festive season, three voices tell us that the machine on our desk is a dog. The advert says it is old. The neighbour says his new one boots faster. The sale banner says this price is only till midnight. By the third voice, a laptop that only needed a small fix starts to look embarrassing.
Very often, a "slow" laptop is not finished. It is waiting for one of three things:
- An SSD. If it still has a spinning hard disk, swapping to an SSD is the single biggest speed-up you can buy.
- More RAM. Going from 4GB to 8GB, or 8GB to 16GB, stops the freezing when many browser tabs are open.
- A new battery. A tired battery makes a good laptop feel useless away from the plug.
Before you drop the goat by the road, check what you actually have. Our 12-point checklist works just as well on the laptop you already own.
Story two: the blue jackal
A hungry jackal wandered into a town at night. Chased by dogs, he jumped into a dyer's tub of indigo and came out bright blue. Back in the forest, the animals had never seen such a creature. "I have been sent by the gods to be your king," he announced, and the lion, the tiger and the elephant all bowed.
For a while it worked. Then one night, a pack of jackals began to howl in the distance. The blue king could not help himself. He threw back his head and howled with them, and every animal in the forest realised what was under the colour.
What this has to do with your laptop
Festive sales are full of blue jackals: brand-new budget laptops with shiny lids, big "NEW" stickers and very low prices. Open the spec sheet and you often find an entry-level processor, slow eMMC storage, a plastic hinge and a battery that was never designed for years of daily use. They look royal on the first day. They howl the first time you open 20 tabs, a Tally company file and a video call together.
A business laptop such as a Dell Latitude, HP EliteBook or Lenovo ThinkPad is the opposite. It was built for five years in an office: metal or reinforced chassis, a keyboard made for typing all day, upgradeable RAM and storage, and a processor from the professional range. After its first corporate cycle, a certified refurbished one costs about what the blue jackal costs new. We compared the two in detail in Refurbished i7 vs new Celeron.
The part nobody puts in the Diwali advert
Most of a laptop's carbon footprint is created before you ever switch it on. Dell's own published footprint for a current business laptop, the Latitude 3450, puts the total at about 121 kg of CO2-equivalent over its life, and 82 kg of that, about two-thirds, comes from manufacturing. Using it for years adds far less than making it did.
So every laptop that gets a second life is a laptop that does not need to be made. Every one thrown away early adds to a problem India already struggles with:
- India generated about 17.5 lakh tonnes of e-waste in 2023-24, up roughly 73% in five years, according to government figures shared in Parliament.
- Only about 43% of it was processed through the formal system. The rest went somewhere else.
- Worldwide, the Global E-waste Monitor 2024 counted 62 billion kg of e-waste in 2022, and only about 22% of it was properly collected and recycled. India is the third-largest generator, after China and the US.
We go through these numbers properly, including where refurbished is not automatically greener, in Is a refurbished laptop really better for the environment?
A Diwali that keeps both instincts
You do not have to choose between the joy of bringing something home on Dhanteras and the wisdom of not wasting. A certified refurbished business laptop does both. It arrives looking and working like new, it costs a fraction of the original price, and it means one less machine made and one less one dumped.
That is the whole idea behind Reboot. Since 2012 we have taken laptops and desktops back from companies when they upgrade, wiped the data properly, put every device through our 16-point check, and sent it out again with a warranty. What cannot be reused goes to our own authorised e-waste recycling unit in Surat, so it does not end up in the 57%.
