ITAD Best Practices: Knowing When to Let Go

ITAD Best Practices: Knowing When to Let Go

When it comes to IT Asset Disposition (ITAD), timing is everything. Disposing of devices at the right moment not only helps maximize value but also extends their impact—socially, environmentally, and financially.

Let me share a personal story.

In 2021–22, I bought a refurbished tablet. I transferred the essentials over quickly but kept the old device around—thinking I’d sort through old photos and files “soon.”
Fast forward to 2024... and that device was now unsupported, outdated, and essentially useless to anyone else.

👉 Had I disposed of it back in 2021, it could have served someone else for another 2+ years.
👉 It would’ve held far more resale or donation value.
👉 And it could’ve made a difference for someone on the wrong side of the digital divide.

That delay cost more than just money—it was a missed opportunity for reuse, circular economy contribution, and social good.

💡 So, when should you decommission?

Ask yourself:

  • Is the device still functional?
  • Can it still receive updates?
  • Could someone else benefit from it now, before it becomes e-waste?

Proper ITAD isn't just about clearing old inventory—it’s a chance to make a difference.
The right process includes:
🔐 Secure data disposal
Refurbishment or component harvesting
🌍 Environmentally responsible recycling
🙌 Social impact through donation or reuse

At Reboot, we help you take the right steps—getting the best value, protecting your data, and creating social impact. ITAD done right isn’t just smart... it’s meaningful.
